Lepke-can you recommend a synthetic relative bearing grease? I hope it is available in cartridges that fit my grease gun. ;>) (Many thanks for this new concept.)

Wotname-2 degrees of error in a handheld device is nothing! I'm being a bit overdramatic here (and don't discount your information.) My point is that it can be a problem to make and plot the observation more accurately than that in the real world.

I think in relative bearing degrees and then translate that into whatever I think will work depending on who I am talking too....sometimes its best just to point.

That works
For me its always been points, but thats cos what I have been used to for over 30 years at sea.
I still use the word "whereaway" when someone on the bridge says they have spotted something. Usually answered with silence at night, or a blank stare during the day.
On the sail boat, I'd just ask whoever had spotted some thing to wave their arm about in the general direction.
