Number with a dot over it in a circle??

My mind (and apparently, my search abilities) is not helping...

I was looking at a chart and saw several “1” with a dot over it in a circle. These are in waterways and on land.

I went back through the Chart 1 and my old 105 book, but coudln’t find something like this. In the back of my mind, I recall seeing this before and looking it up. I recall finding it then and thinking, “of course.” But now I can’t remember what I found and I can’t find it again.

I know everyone else on CF will be saying, “Are you blind? It’s right there on page ###.”

I’d appreciate the pointer to that page

Thanks.

Good question about symbols! I found this NOAA document, which is very comprehensive, but it's from 1997. Maybe someone knows where an updated one can be found. I didn't see it. http://www.seasources.net/PDF/ChartNo1.pdf

I can't answer the OP's question ... but the current US Chart No 1 can be downloaded from NOAA:
https://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/...1/ChartNo1.pdf
Or from the CHS if you want the Canadian version:
http://www.charts.gc.ca/documents/pu...rt-Carte-1.pdf

If I understand correctly, that would be a piling or etc marked "1" right? A fixed point or monument that doesnt float with the tide etc.

Thanks for the information.

Anyone know on what page of the Chart 1 this is shown?

Page 10 , number 22, ⊙ is listed as fixed point.
Also shown as number 32, point symbol ( accurate position)
if the circle doesn't have a dot in it it is considered an approximate position .

Re: Number with a dot over it in a circle??

It would be nice to see a picture of it. Is this an inland chart? The circle with a dot is usually a tower of some sort but that does not sound like what you described. The "one with a dot over it" isn't one of these is it?

don he described a circle with a dot in it above a number.

1. Or any number denoting how many towers in the location.
Is what I am deciphering his post to mean.

Very useful when using a hand compass for triangulating your position on a chart.
