AIS use by commercial fishing vessels

Very low percentage of Comm. Fish. vessels are equipped with AIS.

Re: AIS use by commercial fishing vessels

Based on ? The more annoying thing is the use of AIS beacons used for identifying fishing net location.

True indeed. And almost zero uptake with smaller fishing vessels. Heck, in my waters (and likely yours), AIS signals are few, and often far between. This is why I always grimace when someone suggests AIS can replace radar, or should be considered a primary navigation tool. It's useful, but secondary, at best.

Re: AIS use by commercial fishing vessels

I find in international waters nearly all vessels carry AIS. Can.t comment on local issues. What size of vessel are you referring to ?

By golly, I'm shocked people aren't following the law. We need to pass more laws making breaking laws illegal. That will make people follow the law.

Fishermen in general dont like other people to know where they're "secret" fishing spots are, so why is it surprising a fishing business doesnt broadcast where they are catching fish?

Re: AIS use by commercial fishing vessels

My point is that depending on AIS to show ALL vessels in your area is risky.

What do you mean by "international waters"? You mean out past the 12 or 200 mile limits? Most people sail and cruise within those borders. I've rarely been concerned about traffic far offshore. It's the inshore that is the challenge.

deblen is exactly right. Relying on AIS to be your navigational eyes is risky. It's a great tool, and I bet some areas are better served than others, but it's an observable fact that it leaves out vast swaths of boating traffic. By all means, use AIS. But don't be lulled into thinking it's showing you the whole picture of what is around you.

Re: AIS use by commercial fishing vessels

I guess the article doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, they’re advocating a change that would require AIS on ~20% of fishing vessels vs the current 12%. What’s the point, that still leaves 80% without AIS?

Quote:
The problem, according to Oceana’s analysis, is that only 12% of the more than 19,000 commercial fishing vessels registered in the U.S. fleet are required to carry AIS devices.

According to the report, “the United States requires fishing vessels 65 feet or longer to carry AIS devices and transmit signals within 12 nautical miles from the coast...expanding the requirement in the United States would increase AIS usage by 65%, covering more than 1,500 additional fishing vessels.”
165% of 12% increases the count from 2300 to 3800 but still leaves 15k such vessels without AIS.

My point is simply this: There are and probably will continue to be,for the near future,a heck of a lot of vessels under 50ft travelling N.American coastal waters without AIS. Do not count on AIS to prevent a collision.
Cheers/Len

Good analysis. Thanks for doing some basic math.

Already knew that. I’m far.more worried about the 24’ ski boats and recreational fishing boats than I am about the commercial boats, and I’d guess there are far more than 19000 of those. As everyone has said, AIS is a great tool, but it’s not a watchstanding substitute.

Thank goodness for the EU. Ais is mandatory on commercial fishing boats
