Tropical storm approaching and on my mooring
A tropical storm is approaching Grenada. I have a 8 ft screw into the sea bed. 60 ft of 14mm ground chain, 40 ft of 3/8 cc chain as the riser chain, then 2 lengths of10 ft of 3/8 polypropylene rope from the chain to the boat. This is twisted up to the bow and I have firehouse to guard against chaffing.
My boat is a 33 ft mono. Not sure of the displacement.
Any comments on this setup.
I am also looking at putting my anchor out but not have it tight, just a backup if the ropes break. The anchor has 3/8 chain an is a 20 kg Rocna.
Winds expected up to 50 kph.
Thoughts. Thanks

The 2 poly tethers are the weak kink.

Especially for a motorboat with windage. Any change of replacing that with all chain inside plastic pipe or a much thicker length of nylon.

A+1.. switch to multiplait or 3 strand nylon with 24mm minimum.

Re: Tropical storm approaching and on my mooring
I just called the marine store and am going to add 3/8 HT chain from the boat to the mooring chain. I will leave it a little loose and have it as a backup. I will put a snubber on the chain and use fire hose to protect the boat from the chain.
Plus through out the anchor and that will be a double backup. although if it goes through everything else, it will not be a good day.

3/8" poly? That's too light. And the chain backup is a bad idea. It has no stretch and will saw through the chafe protection and then your boat. You need a piece of 1" nylon line with chafe protection. Where are you anchored?

Re: Tropical storm approaching and on my mooring
So, you are recommending a 1 inch polyester, 3 braid rope. That would make sense and is doable in a short time period. That could be added, although hard to cover in firehose. I could braid one end and attach to the shackle at the mooring and then braid a loop to go around the cleat.
Probably easier than the chain.
That is Secret Harbor in Grenada

Re: Tropical storm approaching and on my mooring
get to a safe harbor and use more than one anchor in mangroves if that is possible. hunker and have a good time watching it without fear of breakaway. i would not stay on a mooring without making sure my anchor will NOT befoul mooring lines, and is placed in such manner as to form a V with the mooring line, and not twist around.. it will need at least 90 degree angle with the mooring chain. if only 50 knots winds, then you may be ok. staying on board? you may wish to have a stern anchor to keep you facing winds. you donot want to be facing winds with beam of boat, only face them with your bow.
i would use heavier than normal 3 strand lines. not skinny strings. yacht braid will snap. watched that happen in 45 kt winds in san diego.

This is about 44Kn. Not exactly a tropical storm.
Anyway all the advice given above is beneficial always.

Re: Tropical storm approaching and on my mooring
With the number of boats in Secret Harbor your biggest potential issue will be others sailing down on you. Woburn Bay is the better option for really big blows. My guess is you will be fine.

Re: Tropical storm approaching and on my mooring
We are also in Secret Harbour and the forecast is calling for 25-35kts with gusts up to 50kts, possibly more. Not mph or km/h. If you are on a screw, IMO you need to get off it and relocate to the west side of the bay (5-8m WD) where there are fewer boats and anchor with as much scope as you have. If you have a 2nd anchor, consider piggy backing it to your primary.
There are a lot of boats way too close to eachother in this bay, and that oddly, doesn't seem to bother some of these sailors. Some are unattended. Dragging boats is a realist scenario as L97 passes over.
