Things to look for in used anchor chain

A local yachtie is switching from 10mm chain to 8mm chain. He’s got 80 meters of 10mm that looks to be in fairly good nick. I’m in search of 80m of 10mm chain. Before I blindly offer him a couple hundred bucks for the used chain, what should I be on the lookout for when inspecting the chain?

It’s galvanized, not stainless steel.

Make a link-by-link inspection, and reject/discard if:
a) Wear exceeds 15% of a link diameter.
b) Cut, nicked, cracked, gouged, burned, weld splattered, or corrosion pitted.
c) Deformed, twisted or bent chain links or components.
d) Stretched. Links tend to close up and get longer.

A few hundred $$$ for 80 metres of 10 mm chain is OK.
- some chain has markings on it, so you know where it is made ir what type of chain it is https://www.anchoring.com/blogs/anch...ut-chain-types
- I would take all the chain out on deck or on the jetty and let it go through my hands, checking for damage and deformities
- check this chain on your windlass first, the chain might be 3/8", or just not fit properly on your windlass
- check if the galvanising is still in reasonably good order, but even if the first or last few metres looks bad, cut that off, and dispose
