Things to Look for In a Tayana 37

I would like to ask folks who own and sail a Tayana 37 if they have any quick advice for (problem) things to look out for in particular when viewing one to buy.

I have heard that they often have problems with the original chain pates. Leaky teak (obviously) and leaky port windows.

They can be very unique as they were a custom ordered interior so it will be hard to get a unanimous response to things to look out for inside... but if anyone has anything they found to be terrible - I'd like to hear it!

I'm not an owner but have heard you need to watch for rotting plywood etc , especially under the head floor area. I assume these would have the same issues as most boats and certainly most Taiwan boats... of course watch for teak deck issues unless you're lucky enough to be looking at one with Fiberglass decks.

wet decks, chainplates, black iron fuel and water tanks, rot in the bowsprit.

The bowsprit might be just fine (mine was). Many of the original black iron tanks have been replaced by POs. The wet decks and chainplates are your biggest issues.

Never heard of a problem with plywood under the head as mentioned above. Mine is a fairly early 1978 model and the shower sump under the floor grating is made of fiberglass.

... shower sump... That info was from an owner who was on the same dock as us in Annapolis.... maybe it was under the shower pan? I forget but he had to tear it all apart.

Check all bulkheads especially around fridge. Chain plates and knees shower sump. Anchor locker and Samson posts propane locker try to avoid painted bowsprits harder to see it's condition Over all they are good boats. Love mine even through this re fit

A ct at my former marina has a small pine tree growing from the bowsprit ,so i guess it is something that goes bad ..it also has cracks at the coaming right at the point it reaches the cabin,dont know if its cosmetic or structural,but its ugly!the owner said it has steel(encapsulated) in the keel and that if it gets water intrusion the metal can expaned from the rust and cause problems!good luck DVC
