Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Last night we had a Bene Feeling 44 drop astern of us using a CQR. I watched them drop and pull back tight on the chain. This morning I got a chance to dive and photograph the set. You can see from the photos the early drag marks before the anchor set, however, when buried i would give this ten out of ten

Our Spade is still in the same position as in my last post!

Hi NornaBiron

Your photos are well complementing this thread - thank You

By the way - it was or Bene or Feeling
Feeling is the brand name for monohulls of Groupe Privilège Marine, not
of Groupe Bénéteau.

Cheers,

Tomasz

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Friends of ours joined us in the anchorage today. My mermaid jumped over the side within a few minutes of their arrival.

An experienced cruiser dropped an experienced Rocna . It was a small private yacht that stayed overnight. 5.3m @3:1.

The Rocna has set in a bit over a metre. It is showing more heaping up than is normal for a rollbar anchor, but at short scopes the heaping up is increased, as the anchor struggles a bit more. 3:1 in 5.3m is tough test.

The set to me looks very good (especially given the shortish scope) with only a small list and a little of the underside of one fluke exposed.

My mermaid is a perfectionist and asked the skipper to put on a bit more force, while she was in the water, to see what the Rocna would do, especially at a shortish scope. More photos of the results of this greater force to follow.

Hi NornaBiron! It is great to be getting some more photos. You're right, that looks like a good CQR set. How long was the drag mark to get there?

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

This was the result with a bit more force applied to the above Rocna.

Have a look at that chain angle. This photo was taken by my mermaid while the engine reverse was applied. Not much catenary here. This is engine force alone.

The shortish scope has resulted in a bit more heaping up of substrate than is usually seen with this anchor. However, the Rocna has set deeply at 3:1 despite the acute upward pull of the chain. It has moved back a fraction more as it has set deeper, but very little considering the short scope.

Note the chain angle:

SARCA Excel in muddy sand.

Here's our 30kg Sarca Excel set in 5m water with 27m chain out, at Dunk Island. The bottom was muddy/sand & as you can see, the visibility was very poor, so I couldn't get any photos that clearly show the amount of distance it took to set. The Excel appeared to set pretty well immediately with only medium reverse throttle.

We were anchored here over night & the wind didn't get much over 15 knots.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Thanks for the photos.

Watch those windsurfers and beach cats at Dunk Island they love terrorising cruising boats.

Best photo in the whole thread..!!! Caternary during a storm...? Most engines can barely replicate 30 knots worth.... Use a snubber..

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Thank You a lot gspeak !

Photos were obviously made in very poor conditions of visibility, so more to Your credit. It looks the Excel set very level, fluke is completely buried and there is no significant heaping up.
Pity we can asess the setting distance, but I'm under impression it set within or almost within it own length, or may be I'm wrong about it?

Thank You again and please keep us updated when it will be possible. For most of us it is not easy to get familiar with Excel anchor.

No windsurfers or beach cats any more since cyclone Yasi destroyed the resort in 2011. Still have to watch out for the local Mission Beach water skiiers & jet skis though.

Woohoo! We finally got a picture of an excel in the wild! Good photos under very difficult conditions. Thank you. I'm very interested in this anchor, so it's great to see it in action.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

One could, perhaps, be forgiven for thinking it's another variation on the Delta.
Its sizing is also similar to the Delta.
Perhaps someone could elaborate as to how it differs, mechanically, from the Delta?

PS I think we're mostly in agreement that, just as with wine, there's no such thing as a bad anchor, it's all down to operator competence.
PPS It's good to see more and more contributions from more and more areas.
