Maggi Chains vs ACCO Chain

Hello friends,

I am about to pull the trigger on some chain and I have two samples of 3/8" G40 chain from Maggi and ACCO. Both seem to have similar galvanizing(the ACCO sample is a couple months old so it is a little darker).

I read the Maggi Aqua7(g70) chain was rusting badly but the Aqua4 was very good. With ACCO, I have read mixed reviews of the more recent chain but the older stuff was solid.

Any recent reviews or experiences on these chains?

In my experience the Maggi galvanizing has held up much better than the Acco.
If you are thinking long term, G70 chain can be difficult to get regalvanized making its long term cost much higher.

Our G4 Maggi chain is 3 years old now and there was Acco before that. The Acco was real crap in my op. The Galv on our vintage Maggi looks more rough than the sample you show and is thicker than the Galv was on the old Acco chain.

Why would a re-galvanizer care if it was G43 or G70?
I understand that due to the heat treat, there may be a slight loss of strength on the G70, but not real significant.

When I tried to get my G70 chain regalvanized the galvanizer refused. They said that the chain would leave their factory stamped G70 yet be 10+% under the G70 spec. I agreed to accept that, but they still said no. Getting chain regalvanized can be a real pain. There are limited places to do it and if the process requires significant transportation then it may not be cost effective.

It's my understanding that when you buy g70 galvanized chain you have already lost that little bit of strength. If you regalvanize, and the galvanize temp is the same, it won't hurt the temper of the chain anymore than the initial dip from factory.

Your statement is likely correct. The problem is that you don't have any control or say about the second galvanizing temperature. How a large factory galvanizes vs how a small regalvanizer does can vary significantly.

That's true. I imagine, or like to think, they would be relatively close in temps. But it would be too hard to find out, or just not worth it. I looked into g70 but I would need to change my gypsy so it's not worth it for the weight we'd save. I'm only looking at 200' or so.

The bath temp is probably as low as possible. I watched the operation at the place in Oakland, Ca. It's like from a movie with all the smoke and flames.

We have been using Maggi G7 for the past three seasons(anchoring out a lot), and it has held up just fine so far.

We went to Maggie chain yesterday, we got 250 feet of 3/8 G4. Preston said they are not selling the 70 until the Italians figure out how to make the galvanizing last.

The service we got was excellent, highly recommended Maggie chain!
