Lighthouse 1501 Windlass fuse/circuit breaker

Hi,

I'm trying to find out what fuse or circuit breaker people are using on their Lighthouse 1501.

I've read in some places that it should be a 300a, and someone has spoke about a Bluesea 300a fuse.

But I'm also guessing I should use a thermal breaker? (nobody wants to replace a blown fuse when anchoring)

Bluesea circuit breakers only go up to 200a

Would like to hear what people have/using thank you.

Links or pictures are welcomed.

Thanks
Tim

First question: what size wire are you using? 12V or 24V?

Second question: 300 Amps?? That seems a bit much for a windlass rated for 80 Amps @ 12V at rated load. Does the manual have a recommendation?

Hi there,

It's 12v. From all the scouring I can find, I've only managed to find a few posts on the internet and one person saying they've used a 250amp fuse, but they recommend 300amp.

I don't have a manual, and there's nothing on their site.

Thought some existing owners could help me out.

Re: Lighthouse 1501 Windlass fuse/circuit breaker

Hi Tim,

I fused the longish wire run to my 12V DC Lighthouse 1501 windlass [installed 2014] to match the ampacity rating [many wiring tables / apps available online] of my wire size over that distance. This is back-up protection for the wiring in case the smaller circuit breaker ever failed in the on position, and protects the wire between the fuse and the breaker- which in my case is ~6 ft.

After the fuse I installed a Blue Seas model 7104 [since deprecated] 150A breaker for the windlass control- which has never tripped while using the windlass. [And I use somewhat heavy ground tackle typically in deep anchorages.]

You could always contact Lighthouse Manufacturing [I hear that telephone is best these days.] I know 3 other cruisers who did business with them in the past few months.

In case this helps.

Cheers, Bill

Re: Lighthouse 1501 Windlass fuse/circuit breaker

Most windlasses are in the 1000 watt range and most take a 150-200 amp breaker. The big Maxwell on my 47 ft boat was 200 amp. The new Maxwell on my 44 ft was 150 amp breaker.
