Re: Changing the anchor light

A couple of years ago Good Old Boat ran a piece on making an anchor light with a baby food jar, an LED light, a fixture, some left over wood, small gauge chain and a length of wire. My boat at the time, a Tanzer 22, did not have an anchor light and the wife and I wanted to anchor out in some local bays. So I spent an afternoon fabricating an anchor light for my boat. I showed it to the local sailing instructor (and resident crusty old salt) and he not only approved but pointed out to me that an anchor light that shines on the deck provides an added level of safety from because it also illuminates the boat at eye level. I have been using this light for several years, and I now use it with my Mirage 27, including a cruise to a neighbouring lake last summer. Sailing friends often comment on the salty look of it as well. Aside from the wire a also use a small diameter line as a downhaul and to reduce swinging.
