pirate Big Ass Chain

I happened on 125' of 7/16" gal chain (38m of 13mm) at a good price.

I think it's an omen. I need want a bigger boat.

It's way too big for my boat. It would be great to build a mooring with but I don't need one now. It's never been in the water and was factory on a Beneteau. Dunno about G40 and so forth but would like to know what I have.

Gotta be decent tradebait.

Wonder if my 25er could stay put in a hurricane with it? Think it's worth keeping myself for that purpose? 250#

Oh yeah, what anchor would be best?

I'd be more concerned about your windlass :-)

13 mil chain is more than 1/2", not 7/16". Half an inch is about 12.27mm.

Must have been a big Bene. Even the Bene 50's come with 10mm chain, as far as I know, and even the 57 came with 12mm. Are you sure it's 13mm?

Re: Big Ass Chain

Its going to weigh about 125Kg, you will need a new gypsy, most small winches cannot fitted with a 12mm/7/16 /1/2 inch gypsy and would not cope with weight anyway.
(Its not practical to lift this chain by hand unless you are a lot stronger than me and only anchor in shallow water)

Fine for a mooring, but I would pass otherwise.

pirate Re: Big Ass Chain

Thanks guys. It was advertised as 7/16 on Craigslist. I used a converter for the 13 mm but see now it was more like 11. I was celebrating my good fortune. 50 something foot Beneteau.

Owners replaced it with a 300' hunk on way to Carib. The deal was too good to pass up as I figured I could resell at worst. Guy threw in several shorter hunks of other big stuff. I don't have a windlass but even if I trade up boats, I won't be getting a 50'. And yeah, I won't be hauling it by hand.

Fact is, I don't want to take it out of the truck. But it's a nice piece of kit as some say. I won't have a problem selling it altho the PO had it on CL long enough to halve the price. But it doesn't look like I can use it. I'd almost bet a beer I can sell it this afternoon at Miller time. Looks to retail for $7.00 or so. Seems worth the hassle. Thanks for the input.
Edit: think I'll just leave it in truck til dispensed with.

Re: Big Ass Chain

Would be good mooring chain for a permanent but is a bit long for that purpose.

Good trading material or get a bigger boat.

kind regards,

Re: Big Ass Chain

A little backwads isn't it to get a big chain and then have to get a bigger boat to put it on

Reminds me of the Moen commercial where the obviously affluent couple ask the architect to design their home around a faucet. I suppose I'd enjoy showing up at Chuck Paine's office with a length of chain and say "Build me a boat around this".
