Best Chain for this gypsy

This gypsy is from an older Lofrans Calypso. I guess the proper chain would be DIN766 but I think 3/8" HT chain would work as well.

Does anyone have any experience with this gypsy?

If it is made for DIN766, you can not be sure that 3/8" HT (G40) will work.

10mm chain is an oddball one, ISO4565, DIN766, HT, BBB are all different.

Are you sure yours is DIN766 and not ISO4565? Both are "metric" standards. For other chain sizes they are the same, but for 10mm they are different...

The real test is to try a test fit. It needs to be perfect to avoid skipping and twisting.

From my brief research, I agree, there are small differences in the various 10mm/ 3/8," chains. I am hoping someone has the same gypsy with the M10 marking and can tell me what they're using.

Imtra's website has a table of various Lofrans gypsy's but the M10 marking isn't listed.

Not sure this is strictly right but it makes sense to me.

I'm going through a similar issue trying to find the right chain for a particular gypsy. Not all chain is the same, each maker seems to have different link lengths and width for a given diameter wire.

PITA

If you have the gypsy in hand when you go into a chain shop. Take a mate and a broom handle. Fit the handle through the hole of the gypsy and run the chain by hand through it at a reasonable speed. The right chain will rotate and run smoothly the wrong one will skip and jump every now and then.

Hello
Just call Imtra and ask for support. They import Lofrans and are very helpful. Tell them the model of gypsy (your photo markings) and they will tell you exact chain size. I had this question and they gave the answer over the phone and very quickly.

SOOOO, the chain bust lay in the bottom of the gypsy, or else it will jump under load, been there , done that. A recent customer purchased a new electric windlass from W.Marine, and hired me to do the install, when i purchased a foot of chain, to insure it would fit, it did not, none of the 1/4" chain fit, not, HT,BBB, ect, the manufacture called for a specific calibration, after talking to the chain manufacture, i was told, they had none in stock, but would be doing a run soon, so a couple of months later i received the correct chain, go figure.

Why not choose the chain you want/need and order a gypsie to fit. If the chain is an odd size you are doing yourself a disservice. Quality chain in common sizes is often available on sale especially in the fall and winter. Ordered my chain and got free shipping too. Overall better selection and pricing than WM.

Why buy a foot of chain to try it in the gypsy? Better yet, remove the gypsy & take it to the chandler or marine store.
I'm assuming all gypsy's can be removed by simply unscrewing the knurled hand nut like the one on my old Muir manual . . . ?

Re: Best Chain for this gypsy

Had a similar problem identifying a loftrans gypsy. I just emailed them in Italy and had a response in a couple of hours. Might be worth a try...
