Anchor Chain

When I check historic anchor chain threads or look at American chandler listings the only American chain maker meriting mention is the Peerless/ACCO combine. I'm not suggesting Peerless cannot provide any chain the market needs but I'm reasoning there are other chain makers (who still make in America for leisure vessel windlass in imperial sizings) - who are they?

Have not heard of or found any, at least that make marine chain. Even tried a local construction and hauling supply wholesaler and he did know of any alternatives to Acco.

It's not North American but 2 1/2 years ago I bought 3/8 BBB that came from Canada Metal. I believe that it came from China. I am very happy with it so far. Titan Marine Chain
I believe that they are the new manufacturers of Rocna anchors as well.

It seems odd that with such a large market there is only one obvious domestic manufacturer. Normally this would lead to high prices. I don't recall seeing Titan on the chandler websites, but I was looking at domestic manufacturers and might have missed them.

It's because of the cost and Compliance issues in galvanizing in the states.

Believe me, if you can source good chain other than ACCO, you will be much better off. In Oz, you should be able to get Italian (Maggi) or French or German chain. These will outlast and outperform anything ACCO makes by a large margin.

I think there is also an aspect of the US sizing. It is peculiar to the US so that does shrink the available market to any manufacturers.

ACCO makes good stuff but they did have a shocker a year or 3 back when they sold some 'premium imported' that turned to pooh on them and the users in no time flat.

Good to know man, good to know. My ACCO stuff is fine now but if it starts turning to garbage in that part of the world I would have otherwise tried to buy ACCO again.

Hi Mark,

Sorry I'm simple inquisitive. Having initiated 'Bigger is better' this then led me to look at the chain options, initially I looked at G7, but the only one (chain maker of any relevance0 I came up with in America was Peerless or ACCO. Which I thought odd (that there was only one) so I was checking to see if I'd missed something.

We have 2 short link HDG chain makers here, PWB and Serafini. Both make a G3 and Serafini profess to make, unusually, a G5. The fact a small population supported 2 chain makers made me think there must be more than Peerless ACCO.

GMac (in one of our offshore islands ) does Maggi, G4 and G7 (and almost every other chain maker) as far as I can tell!

Really extending the original query - If, some, Americans are not impressed with ACCO and continue to use imperial sizes where do you all buy (or source) your chain.

Good stuff. It seems that if you want marine short link and you want to support local industry its Peerless or Campbell. Environmental and Safety issues must have culled the industry. I confess not to have looked at the one stainless supplier as not being mainstream.
