If the second anchor is needed and the sea is seriously tossing your boat, it may be more of a challenge than expected to get the anchor deployed if it's stored out of the way in the rear of a locker. If it's on the bow, the problem is minimized.

I haven't had a problem with my primary, a 44 lb Bruce (some love them while others equate them to being no better than a chunk of concrete), not holding but a few times when a storm was coming fast and time was short, the second anchor, a Danforth, was used to control the oscillations and keep pointed into the wind. It's also nice to have a second anchor out for safety if the primary drags in a 3 am storm. The second anchor is not advisable is the wind is predicted to change direction more than a few degrees.
