Repair aluminium rib

We have a small leak where the hypalon tube joins the aluminum hull

We are in French Polynesia, with severely limited facilites available.

Suggestions on repair?

Re: Repair aluminium rib

Dinghy is an unpainted AB
We had major leaks after a year or so, repaired very well by Hugo the Dinghy Doctor in Rio Dulce.
We were technically under Warranty by AB, but their support was useless.

We like the dinghy in many ways, but have been very disappointed in AB

Re: Repair aluminium rib

If you are not near Papeete and do not have the correct in date hypalon two part glue and correct hypalon material then it will be a struggle to fix with make do products like 5200 fast cure, which may or may not work depending on how clean you can get the area. It might be enough to slow the leak if you can get it to stick.

Hypalon glue repair is a fiddly messy affair and is not good in high humidity areas, but if you have the right gear you could possibly put a new cut in the tube and access the inside of where the leak is and do an internal patch and then put an external patch of the new cut - not something I would do myself as my success rate with this stuff is low.

Re: Repair aluminium rib

If you are talking about a water leak at tube/hull intersection, I've used Shore one part inflatable adhesive successfully on my aluminum AB. There are probably others. Maybe even wetsuit glue.

Re: Repair aluminium rib

I've successfully made a patch using 6oz. glass cloth saturated in 5200.
Even in the constant warm Bahamian breeze, it took a few days to dry.
It lasted for a few years.
