Re: Language barrier, help needed, wanting to repair Zodiac dinghy floor

Hi Bob,

There should be some kind of ID plate on the dinghy, probably the inside of the transom that will give the model number and serial number. With that you should be able to identify the material it's made from.

There are a few ways to tell if you can't find the model. Here's a link to a web site with very good instructions.

PVC or Hypalon? | Polymarine Paints, Adhesives, Parts & Accessories

Toluene is also sold as nitro benzine--but any leftover makes an excellent epoxy-thinner for saturating timber.
Hmmm...

Toluene: ‎C6H5CH3 or C7H8
Nitro benzine:C6H5NO2

Not the same thing at all.

And toluene is indeed the solvent often used with the glues for Hypalon. I have substituted perchlorethylene when toluene was not available... worked ok

Hi!

I found the leak using soap. The dinghy floor was removable (recently bought the boat and got the dinghy along).

A few pics:

And a movie showing the leak:

One of the images shows the plate.

So I got a.

Brand:
Zodiac

Model:
C285 LR

Serial number:
Z11119

Made in France.

And I have to repair it, need to order correct glue etc. Will I have to just glue it, or should I put a patch + glue etc?

Will check the link, thanks.

Cheers

How you repair it will depend where and how big the holes and how long you plan to keep the dinghy. The full and proper repair is to put a patch over the hole. If it's just a pin hole I have just put a little bit of appropriate goop on the hole, massaged it in (with the tube not inflated or at least just enough air to give it some shape) and went with it. Did that with an old dink that's a spare that I didn't want to spend the time and money for a proper repair.

By the way, a quick, cheap dirty repair for small leaks in hypalon dinks is a tube of Aquaseal. Dive shops sell it for repairing wet suits.

Re: Language barrier, help needed, wanting to repair Zodiac dinghy floor

The model that you have(C285LR) is a PVC boat. Since it is a high pressure air floor, correct PSI is 11.2, you will need to install a patch over it. It is going to be difficult to get a good seal being on the edge of the raised piece in your photo. The correct solvent to use is MEK for any PVC inflatable repair. A good quality two part PVC adhesive is your best bet to get a good bond. Something like polymarine or weaver brand adhesive would be best. If you need further assistance, feel free to send me a PM and I will be glad to help.

Cheers, Chris
