Help identify

I bought a yacht. I found an object in it that was unknown to me.
Does anyone know what this is? What is it for?

Re: Help identify

Appears to be an anchor rode kellet, also known as anchor angels, sentinels, or buddies for adding weight to the rode of one's anchor.

Re: Help identify

It IS a kellet. No maybes about it. Modern anchors have pretty much eliminated them as a useful tool--if they ever actually really were.

Specifically, a 22 Lb. “Rode Rider” kellett, sold by Ada Leisure Products.

I disagree. I find kellets to be useful in many situation, even when using modern anchors. One example would be when anchoring in a tight mooring field & needing to short scope the anchor. Another example would be when anchoring up as the pin boat at the start line of a sail boat race & wanting to be sure that you don't trip up the keel of a race boat that crosses the line near you. Another example would be anchoring in heavy weather. Modern anchors are a great improvement over their predecessors and they tend to hold much better than older anchors without being as sensitive to certain details, but the effect of a kellet is still beneficial. I can not remember a single person ever telling me that they anchored too well.
