Re: Grease at a hole on Tohatsu 18 2 stroke.

I have a 2003 40hp 2 stroke Tohatsu with the same hole and it drips a few drops of black oil. Yes, it looks like unburned oil, but I'm not sure either what it is for.

Re: Grease at a hole on Tohatsu 18 2 stroke.

What I'm curious about is why I haven't noticed this on any other (brand) motor. Is it just Tohatsus?

Of course, my sample pool is not real large. And where my dinghy is parked, any drips are very noticeable. And objectionable.

Sent the pic to a mechanic buddy, he said it's a cooling port for the bearing. And the oil is probably from the seal at the pinion shift is getting bad.

Was this a Tohatsu mechanic?

Mine dripped black oil from day one, 17 1/2 years ago. I think it must be a small drain hole so cooling water can drain out of the exhaust system when the motor is raised.

No, not a tohatsu specific mechanic. But does own a tohatsu.
