AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight with 15hp?

I'm thinking of buying an AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight, and I already own a 15hp four stroke. The dink specs recommend an 8hp and specify that the max engine would be a 15hp.

Anyone have experience running that size engine on that boat?

Thanks in advance...

Re: AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight with 15hp?

I have some experience driving my friend's Lammina, and lots of experience riding in it. I think it is a 9.5, but it could be a 10, if they also make that model. He has a 15hp Yamaha Enduro on it and there is no issue at all. In fact, with 4 people in it, it kind of lugs down.

Again, his may be the next size up.

BTW, I have yet to be on a dinghy in real-life usage that couldn't handle the max engine recommended for it. Most are dogs with the recommended size engine.

Personally I think you can go with max engine size plus one, so an 18.5 for you. Mine recommends a 30 and I'm going to replace it with a 40. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it - good motto. I saw my same dingy with a 50hp Honda and it didn't flip so it should be fine.

Not your boat, but some related information:

We have an AB 8UL which has a maximum of 5HP and we've just tried it out with a 2 stroke 6HP and it's good (~11 knots). I thought it might be a bit over powered, but with two of us (~290lbs) we certainly could handle an 8 and will be changing the carb to do this.

Re: AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight with 15hp?

We have had a 9.5al for a few years, mated to a 15hp Yamaha 4-stroke. The boat is a bit deeper v then some others, one of the reasons we bought it. For this reason, I would not want less HP. It has been a good boat for us.

She takes some effort to get it up on plane with three good sized adults.

Re: AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight with 15hp?

Once had a RIB from a different manufacturer that was rated for 8hp. We wanted to put a 15 on it so we checked with a rep from the manufacturer. He said it would handle a 15 as long as we didn't jump over waves or throw it into wide open turns.
We put the 15 on and it would then plane two of us with the big dog and/or a load of groceries. Scary fast with one person though. I once lent it to a friend who came back and said "You have got to WARN people about that thing".
Eventually traded up to a larger RIB just for the space.

Re: AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight with 15hp?

I have a lamina AL 9 with a 87 Evinrude Yachtwin 8 two stroke on the back.. By myself with only a gallon or so of fuel Ina tank up forward, the boat did 15 knots on a nice plane. I have a 9.9 Honda 4 stroke but that thing is heavier than the boat!

If this engine doesn't have enough butt with two people and some goods or three people, I'll probably look into getting the bigger carb.

I have read that the only difference between the 8 and the 15 is the carb. But that was just preliminary scanning of the Internet and forums.

Made a video of first time with the new boat and reworked outboard scooting around

Re: AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight with 15hp?

Shorter dinks have a harder time planing then longer. We had an ultralight apex 9 and w a 15hp yamaha we had to all the way f or ward to plane it. Same eng on a 100lb heavier 1.5ft longer rib and it was wonderful.
