Sta-Lok Goop

Well after a rousing selection of bobstay posts, the manatee crew suggested twisting the topic and put forth the following questions:

1.What substance is best to fill a mechanical fitting. 2. what is the best way to prevent thread lock up and after making up..3.what if any treatment for 316 wire.
The manatees have placed bets on nickel tape, Tef-Gel, 5200, Hot beeswax ,no acid silicon, hot tar, hot lead, pine tree sap and of course... marmite.
Tips for removing stuck formers adds five points.
Tool tips adds 10 points.
Truly funny mistakes, 20 points.
Cameras ready? Let the fun posts roll.
The manatee crew

tefgel on threads

4200 in the void.
I did that on my 7/16" 1x19SS head stay and 5/6" 1x19SS inner fore stay wires 4 years ago.

I was changing the inner fore stay furler last week and had to take out the foils by cutting off the wire at stalok at the top.

i was pleased how easy it was to save the fitting and re-assemble with new wedge and new former.

I was fortunate to have enough on the turnbuckle studs to keep the still relatively new wire.

once wire is cut with an angle grinder, put the fitting in a vice or grip with channel locks, and knock it out with appropriate punch

Re: Sta-Lok Goop

I did an experiment 10 years ago with my Hi-mod fittings. Some I left empty as was suggested by the instructions, others I filled the wire/cavity with lanocote. On all I used blue loc-tite on the threads.

Advance 10 years….while renewing the wire the lanocote terminals were pristine inside. The dry terminals were filled with green corrosion from the crown ring…otherwise seemed OK.
