A light on a private yacht doesn't have to be USCG approved. It just has to be the right color, shine in the proper directions and be visible for the correct distance.

Anyone that is just using the one masthead light at night is asking for trouble. It is so easy these days to light up the deck with LED lights so that the boat will not just blend in to the starlit night when being approached by small boat.
