Re: HOW MUCH EXTRA LINE DO YOU CARRY?

Inventory it and cut out any imperfections if the remaining length is less than 100 times it’s diameter, I’d scrap it. Any length over that, clean it, coil it and label it. Then make up an inventory list on your iPad/laptop with a location noted. As for chain rode, essentially I’d do the same. But also put chuckles on each end so it’s ready for attachment quickly. In my opinion, if you’re cruising in out of the way locations even in North America, you can never have too much good line or chain.

Chuckles? Shackles?

I agree with the concept of storing a variety of short lengths of assorted rope. That makes a lot of sense, there are always lots of uses for them, especially small stuff. But I'd take the 100 x with a grain of salt. How many 1 metre lengths of 10mm rope or chain do you need?

To adapt an old aphorism, you can never be too thin, have too much money or have too much rope. People often say the rope is too short, rarely do they say the opposite.

Short answer. Always feels like too much. Is never enough.
