Can I get larger rope channels for a winch?

So I bought a new winch to replace the old non self tailing one for my main sheet. I replaced it with exactly the same size (16) and it was a perfect drop in replacement. The issue is that the plastic rope channel at the top (not sure what it’s called) with a larger one? It it set up for like 3/8 line and what I have is 5/8 so it won’t fit.

Do you need 5/8" line for the application? Would 3/8" or 1/2" be strong enough?

If so, switching out lines would be easier than finding larger jaws to fit that winch. If it's a Lewmar 16 it can handle up to a 1/2" line. (would need to go to a 50ST for a 5/8" line)

Re: Can I get larger rope channels for a winch?

Depending on the maker the self-tailer jaws may be adjustable up to a point.

It seems to me that 5/8 line is mismatched for a size 16 winch. The jibsheets on my boat are 1/2" polyester, and I have size 48 primaries. 1/2" is the largest rope that can be used with my primaries, according to the manufacturer's literature. My mainsheet is 7/16".

Often for the mainsheet an oversize rope (compared to what is required strictly for strength) is used to make it easier to hold in the hand. You may be better off dropping down a size for compatibility with your winch.

You may also want to look at the designer's specifications for your boat and see whether 5/8" rope is actually specified for the mainsheet. It is possible that a previous owner changed out the recommended rope for something larger.

Indeed.
The Lewmar size 16 Self-Tailing Winch is designed for a maximum ½" line size.
Size 16
Base Diameter: 4-3/4"
Height: 5-3/4"
Line Size: 5/16" - 1/2"

I too believe that for any loads that can be handled by that winch 5/8 inch line is WAY too big. Not only will a smaller diameter line fit the winch better but it will almost certainly run freer with less frictional losses in the blocks. I think you might well be surprised at the difference!

My Lewmars have spring loaded tailers. So the resting channel width is not a good indication of capacity.
