watermaker Low pressure pump choice?

Hello everyone,

I'm rebuilding a watermaker from second hand parts found here and there ...
My HP pump is the Cat 277 model, drived by a 220V triphase engine of 1.1kw. Pulleys ratio is ok to run the pump at 1400rpm when the electrical motor is at nominal rpm.
But i have the masterpuppy 12v pump as low pressure pump. I've read here on the forum that this pump is not ideal for this application, and so I'm asking an experienced advice by experimented users to make the good purchase!

Which kind of pump do you recommend, brand, quality, models, type ?

If i'm correct the feeding flow should be a little bit more than the Hp pump flow rate , so i guess more than 3.5 gpm (flow of the cat 277 at 1420rpm)

Thanks for your precious help.

Kind regards

Laurent

Re: watermaker Low pressure pump choice?

I feel that the boost pump on all AC high capacity pumps is the weak spot. This is because no one wants to use an expensive pump and instead try to use some "standard" pump and try to make it's long runtime work out by adding a fan etc.

Seawater Pro has an "interesting" boost pump now after going through a lot of other types. It is small, water cooled, and automatically variable flow. It is pretty cheap off their website compared to just a pump head for my old Spectra. I can not say how it is going to work long term as my only has around 10 hours. If you have capacity questions about it etc. I am sure if you ask they will answer as they answer everything it seems keeping the owner up and midnight.

install Cat 277 under waterline of boat and you don't need low pressure pump

Thanks for your return,

Their boost pump looks to be a classic circulating pump.
It could be good, I'll ask them the specs of their boost pump as there is not too much infos on the website.

Any pump that exceeds the flow rate of the hp pump will work.

Re: watermaker Low pressure pump choice?

The actual master puppy 12V that i have is given for more than the HP needs and finally it's working in a negative inlet pressure.
So that's my interrogation !
Even with the pipe directly connected from the outlet of the puppy to the inlet of the HP pump inlet (so without any filters etc) the HP inlet pressure gauge indicate "0" as soon as the hp pump is started.
