VFD inverter compressor refridgeration

So the time is coming to finally fix my reefer and the question popped into my head... Does any of the new VFD inverter technology we're seeing in air conditioner systems translate to refrigeration? Or will it in the near future?

I spent an hour googling but figured someone knowledgeable might be able to lay it on me.

Danfoss variable speed 12/24 volt refrigeration compressors have used the Variable Frequency three phase pulse driven compressors for over 20 years. Their 12/24 volt electronic modules converts DC current to a modified lower AC voltage three phase pulse current. Compressor VF speed can easily be changed for better energy efficiency automatically or manfully.
