Suck or Blow ? Compressor Venting

Heh. You all have such bent minds...

My engineer father taught me when removing heat from a small space it is better to suck the heat out so you can move the hot air out of the small constricted space UP where it naturally wants to go, rather than blowing the cool air into the cramped space where it usually hopes to sink to the bilges and hang out.

Depending on the installation ymmv, but in this case it sounded as if, all other issues being equal, let the heat work for you and with the fan by piping it up... would mean that sucking would be the correct action to take!

Blow cool air from the bilge or somewhere not in the cabinet. Directly as possible onto the compressor and coils. Allow somewhere for the air to vent. You will extract more heat from the unit. I have a similar situation I sucked for awhile now I'm totally blowing it life is better now that I'm not a sucker.

We nearly had to call a mayday when crossing bass strait and running out of beer. Then we remembered a few cans of Guinness rolling around in the bilge, so we were able to make port unassisted.

I recently had this problem with my refer at home. The condenser ( I think that ting with all the fins is called) was iced up so it would not suck up any of the air from the freezer into the freezer unless the freezer door was a little open. If it is in a cupboard I think that you need a place to draw the air from and a place to push the air to. I wold think that you would want to suck the air from the cold place and blow it over the compressor and out the cupboard.

Just as a follow up.

I removed the metal vouvered plate from the Compressors radiator area. That increased air flow. It sucks air in.

I put my fan at the other end of the cupboard to suck air out of the cupboard

Then I bought some 110mm flexable air vent tubing and put it on my sucking fan and the other end up near the hotest part of the compressor.

So the air goes in through the compressor vent, radiator, and fan. Then gets sucked past the hot compressor into the new air vent tube and out the sucking fan.

So there's a circle of air.




The whole thing sounds cooler and doesnt make naughty noises.

If you really want to move a fluid (yes air is a fluid when it comes to moving it) direct a fluid stream through a reducing restriction. This will create a venturi effect which will move many times the original amount of fluid through the pump. Venturi effects work best when the fluid is pushed, but will work when the fluid is drawn through. Of course you need to provide an escape path for all the additional fluid. The formula is an inverse square (double the diameter of the opening QUADRUPLES the flow).

In addition to all the above... I'd duct the hot air out of the hull!

The 12 volt computer fan is a great idea. I installed some in two places where I have electronics generating heat. You can even buy thermostatically controlled computer fans which run faster when more heat is being generated, saving you the noise and wasted energy of having a computer fan running at full speed all the time.

In high humidity environment water tend to condense on the fan blade. If blowing into an enclosure, that water will be thrown at the equipment in the enclosure.

Look on the bright side The water might then evaporate from the heated equipment, thus further cooling it... <sarcasm>

LOL! Can't help it! Us stupid hillbilly firemen have fluid dynamics hammered into us at the academy! BUT we can clear smoke from a 40,000 cubic foot house with a 400 CFM fan in 90 seconds! OR a with hoseline pointed out a window in about 30 seconds!
