Solenoid valves

I have started using 12V solenoid valves around my boat and wanted to share some ideas with the forum. These are simple solenoid devices, normally closed that open when 12V is applied to them. There are simple, hose barb versions ($9.99), threaded versions and stainless steel ones ($39.99). They are way cheaper than manual valves and offer a great convenience:

1. I have one installed in the water maker raw water input, between the filter and the T-from the engine raw water input. This allows easy operation of the water maker, you just flip a switch and fresh water starts coming in. The next modification here would be an automatic water maker cycling based on tank water level, so that the water maker becomes as automatic as the fridge is.

2. I have another one installed in the shore pressure water inlet when docked. This way, when leaving the boat, you just flip a switch and do not worry about a leak sinking the boat. I have been even thinking about a 1h timer that would automatically shut it off in case I forget the flip the switch.

3. I am thinking about installing a stainless one in the engine raw water intake. This way you no longer need to worry about closing the intake before leaving the boat. It can be wired to the engine starting circuit, so that it is install and forget (need to reconcile with 1).

Any thoughts? Do people feel comfortable from a safety point of view with below waterline installation of such valves or it is not worth the hassle?

I would worry about idea #3. It would be set up to shut off the water if no power is applied, which suggests that in the event of a loss of power or other failure you would automatically cut off your cooling water. Probably not what you want to do.
