Actually I have found a place on a boat where it can be effective, for its low cost--where there is a a narrow space between deck and headliner, or between hull and hull ceiling.

Re: Prodex insulation for icebox?

We actually lined the entire inside of our icebox with Reflectix - yes, it's like foil-lined bubble wrap. It was recommended by friends who use it in their greenhouses. It extended the life of our block ice by several days. If you are only out for a week or so at a time, its a great and inexpensive way to keep things cooler.

Re: Prodex insulation for icebox?

There really isn't any substitute for a properly insulated box using either XPS R5 per inch (extruded polystyrene ) or Polyiso (Polyisocyanurate) R6.5 per inch. Of course a proper vapor barrier and tape all the edges of the polyiso . Build the layers up to R30 and you have a great box that will last many many years. Its not terribly expensive but it does take time .

Regards

Absolutely IMPERATIVE to make it totally impervious to any moisture intrusion, or you will have a wet sponge for insulation.

-------------

"Polyisocyanurate insulation (Figure 3) has a less well defined cell structure, meaning cells tend to be irregular in shape and size and sometimes blended together. Irregular cells, combined with the hydrophilic chemical tendency of polyiso to seek a bond with water, results in higher water absorption compared to XPS."

--------------

That's why I rebuilt our box with Aerogel which is hydrophobic.
