I figured as much. I hoped to be as energy independent as technology would allow. I hoped super insulation and a tiny volume to be cooled might get me in the game, but it seems I'd need an aircraft carrier for all the solar panels needed for AC on the hook. Oh well, if I have a fridge and icecubes I guess I'll be living well enough.

Sounds good enough. I would add some 12 volt fans. Those you could easily handle and they do help even on the worst nights.

Being energy independent is about the energy you don't need. It's after you have reduced all the waste and things you don't really need that you even have a chance of making it work. Even large battery banks need to be recharged some time and of course you are still using energy while you make surplus to do that.

I have had good luck with Mermaid.
Even if you don't need heat get the reverse cycle heat option. It can't be retro fited to the unit. If you go to sell he and the next owner wants heat they'll have to replace the units.

Why can't it be retrofitted? I was told the same thing when enquiring about mine, but don't actually know what the issue is.
