World Ocean Day

UN WOD 2024

World Ocean Day is an international day, that takes place [annually] on 8 June. The concept was originally proposed, in 1992, by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development, and the Ocean Institute of Canada, at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

While the official UN designation for World Oceans Day is still 8 June, the 2024 event will be celebrated on Friday 7 June.

Tune in virtually, on 7 June 2024 , as we dive beneath the surface and explore new depths of understanding, compassion, collaboration, and commitment to protect the ocean, and all it sustains [especially cruisers].
Register now. for the live broadcasted event from 10AM-1:30PM EDT on Friday, 7 June at UNWorldOceansDay.org .

The average sea surface temperature (SST), for May 2024, over 60S–60N, was 20.93C, the highest value on record, for the month.
May was the fourteenth month in a row that the SST has been the warmest in the ERA5 data record, for the respective month of the year.

Then, there's the global ocean heat content (OHC), which is the temperature of the upper 2000m of the oceans.
That too, was at a record high in 2023. Most of this change was confined to the top 100 - 700m.
OHC is a critical climate indicator. Our oceans, which cover more than 70 per cent of the planet, store more than 90 per cent of Earth's excess heat.

Re: World Ocean Day

World Oceans Day is about honouring and protecting the world's oceans, and serves as a reminder of the critical role oceans play, in supporting life on Earth.
These gargantuan water bodies, after all, teem with wonders, from the tiniest plankton, to the grandest whales.
The oceans also produce almost half of the oxygen on our planet, thanks to the photosynthesis of plankton.
Moreover, they absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping mitigate the impacts of climate change, caused by human activities.

Oceans face many threats, including rising sea temperatures, thanks to global warming, plastic pollution, and ocean acidification, which threatens many marine species.
The theme for this year's World Oceans Day is 'Awaken New Depths.' This motto encourages us to delve deeper into the ocean's complexities, and take urgent actions to ensure that these fascinating, ocean-dwelling animals continue to grace our planet, for generations to come.

To celebrate, the BBC has put together short guide, to the world's five oceans.
Do you know your Arctic from your Atlantic? Your Indian from your Pacific?

So, are you ready to take the quiz?
