HEATER & HOT WATER @ 12 V - 5 amps

Well, here is our Christmas present from China Town

I am sure soon we get swamped but the good news is this will solve a few problems on board and hopefully also kill a few of them dangerous propane bottles if not entire propane installations.

Of course itīs worth the torture of 40 minutes of Your time but I admit I also suffered.

Merry Christmas from Mr. David McLukie

Hahaha, I like the name

That's pretty cool, thanks for posting. Air and water. And I see it comes with what looks like a circulator pump. Not bad for $250.

I'm not ready to commit 40 minutes of my life to it though. Any highlights you care to report?

Great concept!

Now one fueled by petrol / gasoline please.

Propane will likely be a longer wait.

Diesel best safety for boats of course

All I have so far. Came from nowhere out of the cloud to my PC last night.
Well, still more expensive with shipping and all the extra FUZZ but I am sure soon Amazon will be swamped.
Well. Mr. Mc Lukie shows how it works , some quality issues and he disassembles the unit. There are also some comments on the $$ FUZZ $$.

I guess thatīs there ainīt much more besides Your ideas

Yeah, it really is, and absolute primitive, same as heater

7 KW 12/24 V that opens a lot of doors

Have You read some of the comments on Mr. McLukieīs channel ?
One gets me.... I could not resist.....

From "sublicenseable" >>>> hahahaha
I wonder if Mr. Eberspacher or Webasto is watching this and thinking it's their turn to copy the Chinese?

Yeah, the propane story will take longer, but one step at the time.

Thoughts that came to mind
with the hot water side it should also be posible to drive heat exchangers with fan to get to difficult access location on the boat for better heat distribution or target heat to a specific location like for example a little radiant panel for warm feet under the saloon table.
In the old days the engine coolant heater was used to help with cold start and to minimize toxic emission.
Definitely a less engine hours without heat of cooling system for hot shower

Well, with gasoline the whole story gets a little more explosive. I donīt think so. Imagine where else this combination will be used now with the addition of hot water. Part of the world is already using only the heater. I think it would be wise to avoid. With Diesel no safety issues, NO NOISE

Of course Diesel most safety for boat and best energy density
Next in line Lithium batteries in combi with Solar
Of course No Teslar fire crackers with all safety features eliminated
My limit besides straight LFP is Pouch Cells with latest chemistry or LTO.

5 amps for heating and hot water ? Of course with the help of the Diesel energy density. That is very good and together with many refrigeration that today can run at 5-10 amps ? Even small boats have enough fuel on board for extended use. That is realistic without huge solar farms and house banks.
The price is reasonable, installation and maintenance is easy and cheap.
That leaves only cooking for propane.

Is that the missing link to eliminated propane for smaller size boats ?

A disadvantage I think about is what to do with excess heat while heating water in summertime at 100šF. I guess, only way is routing it directly outside with a "Y" connection or it could heat up the whole boat. Sure donīt wanna be close to the output side.
Also what happens to the hot water during extensive use with the heater while not circulating ? Well, at least no pressurized circulation required.

I hope they fix their quality issues soon.

Exactly, aka hydronic system. Tied in with the other available means of heating water more cheaply.

Only raised gasoline for vehicles (not necessarily just boats) that use that fuel, rather than carrying diesel around as well.

Plenty have gone all-electric for that now.

At the price buy two to start, learn to maintain / repair DIY, source better parts.

Re: HEATER & HOT WATER @ 12 V - 5 amps

The issue is it also puts out lots of hot air which you may not want for several months each year.

This would IMO be a better idea . Just not as cheap.

Yes if it lacks the ability to disable the forced-air side and only heat water, then forget it.

the burner draft fan and the prime air moving fan are on a common motor

Re: HEATER & HOT WATER @ 12 V - 5 amps

So winter-use only.

Take back the forget it,

I guess for someone already happy with their HWS, primarily looking for just the space heating.

The nice thing is when it's been off in Arctic conditions, coming into an ice cold space,

hydronic has a lag time, while forced air's pretty quick warmup.

Letīs go to the movies

Mr. McLukie has some exciting experiments with EGR

I had to look up what an EGR cooler is. Basically, an air-water heat exchanger made for exhaust gasses.

Interesting. In theory, one could use this to (1) cool the exhaust gasses coming out of these diesel "parking heaters," and (2) recover some heat for your domestic hot water supply.

I'm actually more interested in (1). That exhaust hose scares the crap out of me. I think I measured over 700F when I first ran it, before I added the high-temp manifold insulation.

My concern would be backpressure. Those things (at least, the Russian Planar model I have) overheat with any obstruction in the cabin air or exhaust as it is.

Re: HEATER & HOT WATER @ 12 V - 5 amps

Well, I see a lotīs of options in those tests

Nš1 cooling the exhaust gases is certainly a way to eliminate those high temps at the outlet even so not required and once they are cool handling is safe.
Back pressure will depend on volume the EGR can handle AKA the sum DIA in relation to CIA exhaust of all the tubes. Heat transfer of exhaust gases through copper, no direct contact with the water circulation. The backpressure is on the side of the water and controlling the temp with the flow rate of the pump.
But since the highest temp is only directly at the exhaust port the EGR has to be mounted directly to the exhaust port and that in Your case of Your heater is downwards. So that means now You have to change the position of the heater or the position of the duct. He mentioned that he can get the EGR for a reasonable price. His one is looking good. I would stick to it. Lotīs of workmaking the EGR DIY.

Nš2 Yeah 700F. I remember very well from last year. We already back then talked about the posible use of the waste heat for heating water but I really did not expect it to be that efficient, neither with the EGR or with the heat exchanger mounted like in the new model

In regards to backpressure what really surprises me is when he injects the "heated air" from the heater into the EGR that has a lot smaller intake DIA. Thatīs gotta creat a lot of back pressure but obviously no problem. I could imagine that also helps issue with build up of sud at LOW output. Due to the backpressure there will be higher temp in the burn chamber

Of course now the issue of summertime would be resolved. the use of EGR of both, heated air and exhaust gases at the same time is super charged efficiency and heating up a deposit of water will be very fast. Just imagine using a timer to have hot water in the morning with some 15-20 minutes with low amp while battery is trying to recover with solar
BUT HOW TO make mechanics in to a nice unit.

> My concern would be backpressure. Those things (at least, the Russian Planar model I have) overheat with any obstruction in the cabin air or exhaust as it is.

Yeah, what did they do, eliminate the thermostat ?
But this guy is not Chinese and looks like his tests are serious.
Did You check out the other vids on his YT channel ?
Yeah, a lot more tests in regards.

Re: HEATER & HOT WATER @ 12 V - 5 amps

So here is the HOT WATER ONLY option and without the hot air of the heater

Exhaust gas issues are the same as with the air heater.
Letīs wait if he comes up with a nice off the shelf EGR to take care of the high exhaust gas temperatures.
No info on amp draw but most likely more or less the same and actually what does it matter for the short time to make hot water with this unit?

Remains to be seen what it looks like inside

Re: HEATER & HOT WATER @ 12 V - 5 amps

Great thread. Last year a friend of mine installed one of the small Chinese heaters in his boat, and it was nice to have on a mid-spring cruise that I crewed on. I look forward to hearing about how reliable it is, long-term.

I like that they run on diesel. Propane would be my second choice, and I wouldn't want a gas (petrol) one under any conditions.
