Any experiential ideas on what the best and least stinky composting head is out there for a 24’ Pilot Cutter with a very small enclosed head?

The C-Head is about the smallest dessicating head. Haven't actually used it so can't comment on smell but nothing could be worse than the now departed wet head and holding tank.

My experience with a Nature's Way head has been that a good method to agitate the peat moss/stuff in it and a good reliable ventilation system (I use a 90mm computer fan) are key factors in controlling order. Also need to have a good system to keep urine and BM apart. If you are size constrained there are several DIY options where you build a composting head based on the amount of space you have. Fairly easy thing to do.

The C-Head is probably the smallest of the production built composters and they come in a variety of configurations. Because they are smaller you have to change the compost more often which means more labor, but also a lesser chance of breeding flies!
Which one is the best? It’s a crap shoot!

Another self-contained system worth considering: On any boat smaller than about 28', a self-contained system—an "MSD" portapotty-- makes a lot of sense. The "MSD" designation in the model name/number means it has fittings for a pumpout line and vent line, and is designed to be permanently installed (actually just sturdier brackets than portables, so you could still take it off the boat if you absolutely have to), which means that although it's still called a PORTApotty, you don't have to carry anything off the boat to empty it. You could even set it up to dump at sea, eliminating the need to find a pumpout.

A 5-6 gallon model holds 50-60 flushes...you'd need at least a 30 gal tank to hold that many from a manual marine toilet. No plumbing needed except a vent line and pumpout hose--so no new holes in the boat...and -0- maintenance needed except for rinsing out the tank--which you can do with a bucket while it's being pumped out. Total cost including the pumpout hose and vent line is about $200--a fraction of what you'd spend for a "composter." And the best part is, you have all the advantages of a toilet and holding tank without giving up a single square foot of storage space.

Check out the Thetford 550P MSD and the Dometic/SeaLand 975MSD Sanipottie.

Thetford has discontinued the 550P MSD, but it’s still available from most retailers…the Dometic 975MSD is still in production. They’re comparable, and not much can go wrong with either one.

As others have said, look at C-Head. It's smaller than the other major commercial options: Nature's and Air. But you might look into custom building your own. They're not rocket science.

A properly functioning composting head will not smell -- at least not of anything offensive. The only odour you should get is a slightly musty, earthy smell.

Thank u 4 the info on the C-Head Peter, just the right size for my 24’! Tom & Mike thank you for the input and you are both right, after looking at the price for basically a bucket and some albeit nice looking exterior housing for it and a gallon jug, I’m researching the best way to build my own custom version that will complement my smallish, OK tiny, head. Peggy thank you for a good less expensive than C-head option. With a custom build I’ll Glean some extra storage space too. Love the hat Tom... great hat for Lattitudes where the Ozone is thin!
