Cheap diesel heaters

Has anyone bought and installed one of these knockoff diesel heaters from eBay or Amazon on their boat? Did you need more exhaust pipe to make it overboard? Considering spending some time in cooler climates and currently have no heat! Was think of one unit in each Hull.

Re: Cheap diesel heaters

There was a thread a few weeks ago from an enthusiastic purchaser of a diesel bullet heater. Thoughts: Gotta be sure that the exhaust gets overboard and does not come back aboard. Buy a carbon monoxide detector and install it. Be sure that the heated air is kept separate from the exhaust gas.

Here it is:

HEATER & HOT WATER @ 12 V - 5 amps
Well, here is our Christmas present from China Town

I am sure soon we get swamped but the good news is this will solve a few problems on board and hopefully also kill a few of them dangerous propane bottles if not entire propane installations.

Of course it´s worth the torture of 40 minutes of Your time but I admit I also suffered.

Merry Christmas from Mr. David McLukie

Hahaha, I like the name

Re: Cheap diesel heaters

I've probably said this many times here, but it bears repeating:

Those things are designed to exhaust directly down from the chassis of a truck.

In a boat, you not only have to worry about directing the exhaust outside, but the exhaust hose can get red-hot. Literally. Not something you want anywhere near any flammable wood or fiberglass. And since they're not made to use a long exhaust hose, the backpressure may cause it to overheat and shut down. You also have to worry about water getting into the hose and pooling in any low spot, or, worse, getting back into the heater.

Solve the exhaust problem, and they're great.

Throw the exhaust hose and muffler that comes with it away! The muffler is not airtight since it was designed for mounting below a road vehicle and the exhaust hose is thin gauge and poor quality. You'll want to buy a sealed marine exhaust from Webasto, Planar or Eberspacher... we went with a Webasto unit that is 6' overall.

The rest of the unit is great.

Interesting thread from this forum: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ue-211505.html

Search you tube "Just About Sailing - Installing a Chinese Diesel Heater" for instructions.

Also see you tube video on installing a Chinese Planar diesel heater:

Re: Cheap diesel heaters

I've done this install in summer and I enjoy it this time - when I get to the boat )

The heater itself and its accesories are dirt cheap, but I had to add around 500 euros for all the others bits needed. Of course I have plenty of leftovers, so in case of two heater those 500€ won't double but it would be more anyway (double throughhull, exhaust pipe and sealed silencer, thermic wrap etc).

Maybe you can you an Y and install just one heater, diverting part of its output to the other hull?

They won't go below 900W (even real 2kw ones).
