Bilge pumps that don't leave water behind

i agree it's worse in cats (we have 4 bilge pumps...one in each corner...so 4 puddles)

but the only annoying water ingress we have is from the 2 hot water systems. when these heat up (either from the engines or from the 240v generator), there is some expansion of the water and this goes into the engine bilges (usually say 5L)

one day i need to re-work the plumbing to take this overboard...

Or put a proper expansion tank on the water heaters.

I went through that in a house I owned. Was in a high water pressure area (read AT sea level) and so had a regulator on the water main. No backflow when the water heater kicked on. After the second heater failure and lots of water on the floor from the overpressure relief valve the light went on. An expansion tank.
I’ve seen that on a couple of boats I’ve owned.

even a bucket at the HWS would be easier than trying to get it out of the engine bilge...

Expansion tank would definitely be the best option for the water heater problem in my mind. Unlike the other options, it avoids you losing any water as it expands, being that it'll just get stored in the expansion tank and returned later as the system cools instead of being discarded through the T&P valve.
