New prop shaft play

Hi,
I have installed new cutless bearing 1 1/4 inch Johnson and new prop shaft using 1 1/4 shaft. The shaft has a slight play in the cutless bearing and wondering if this is OK?
Thanks

I am not an expert but I don’t think any play is ok. Is the shaft perfectly 1.25”?

One of the things surveyors check is for that play and recommend to replace the cutlass bearing if there is any.

Are you sure the play is between the shaft and the cutless bearing, and not between the cutless bearing and the skeg or other housing that the cutless bearing sits in?

Re: New prop shaft play

Hi,
It’s between cutless bearing and prop shaft.
I bought 1 1/4 316 S.S shaft and had it machined one end for prop. I am wondering if the shaft is not exactly 1 1/4 inch. Will check.
Thanks

Re: New prop shaft play

How much movement is there? A small amount is not a big issue, a mm or more would be serious. And is there any possibility of a metric vs imperial dimensions issue? The anodes that I buy here in Oz for my 1.250" shaft are marked "32 mm" and they work fine, but that slight difference might show up in a cutless bearing fit.

Re: New prop shaft play

Very little movement. The Johnson cutless bearing box shows 1/14, not sure if shaft is 32mm or 1 1/4. If it was a 32mm shaft it should have no play.
Thanks

Then I wouldn't worry about it. Even if it starts out with no clearance, pretty soon it will have some from normal wear. When it gets up to a mm or two replacement becomes a good idea. Usually last a long time unless motoring in silty abrasive water a lot.

According to data found on pacificmarine.net a new cutless bearing of your size should have between .003” & .008” clearance between the bearing and the shaft. They claim this is US Navy spec.....

Re: New prop shaft play

Ideally there should not be any play, especially with a new shaft and bearing , i would mic the shaft, would be suprised if the bearing was larger than it should be , normally i need to grease the shaft to slide it thru the bearing , a slightly loose fit will not be a problem, it however at a faster rate, alot will depend on how much motoring you do.

Re: New prop shaft play

Hi,

Found out from Johnson bearing that there has to be little play for water to go in between shaft and bearing, acceptable tolerance for 1 1/4 shaft is between .003 to 0.007 inch. Information is on there web page.

Thanks

I guarantee you do not have a 32mm shaft.
