Reasonably priced Trawlers?

Reasonably priced trawlers... I don't know if such thing exists; what I noticed is the fact that pretty much all the trawlers are swimming money pits. Has any manufacturer designed a basic full displacement trawler without all those luxury bells and whistles?

The sister site to this forum is https://www.trawlerforum.com/ and a good resource for trawlers.

I think all boats could be categorized as 'money pits'. I'm not sure what you consider 'reasonably priced'. It's also not clear what you consider 'luxury bells and whistles'.

Good forum, TY. Don't worry about what I meant with my vague wording, a long story; I'll check the forum you recommended...

I will look for you in the Trawler Forum. There is a hint of cynicism in your tone here, wouldn't go there with that - love of boats and boating overrides financial sensibilities.

Trawlers are hot items .. used and new. Like real estate .. there is a bubble right now. Supply and demand. Umbrellas cost more in the rain.

Re: Reasonably priced Trawlers?

A lot of people didn't lose their jobs and have decent money. Due to pandemic, they are restricted in ability to travel and take vacations. They are pressed at home and spending less than in years before.

Net effect is a perfect storm in boats and RVs. They are a good social distance activity.

Not restricted to trawlers. Same in sailboats

Re: Reasonably priced Trawlers?

Define "reasonably priced".

There has been a move across the boat building industry towards larger and more expensive boats.

Why? Same reason car companies push SUVs and Pickups...they sell for higher profit margins.

I've always been a fan of the old (1980's vintage) Mainship trawlers. Salty looks with a single slow turning diesel for power. You'll find them for $25-50k. If you can't afford that, you can't afford the care and feeding of a cruising boat anyway.

If you don't want all the toys and a name brand then a converted excommercial vessel may suit.

Great option to avoid the overpriced often less than sea worthy mini yachts called “trawlers”

Re: Reasonably priced Trawlers?

Would help if you gave a few clues on how you want to use the boat, where you are located, and what your budget is. If you're in the very lowest budget category, you will find more sailboats than powerboats, especially if you want to have a range of greater than 600 nms nonstop or so. But if your budget is in the $50k+ range and you are reasonably handy, there are plenty of options.

Long term the ownership costs between comparable trawlers and sailboats are similar.

Re: Reasonably priced Trawlers?

A maple bay would be an awesome affordable trawler or a Vashon pocket.
