Looking for brand recommendations for long range cruising motor yachts

I know about kady krogen, and Nordhavn. Both of these are wildly out of reach for me financially.

Are there any other cruising motor yachts that are comfortable at sea, 3000+ mile range, and efficient? I know the nordhavn and KK's can get 4+ mpg.

Recommendations? Brands to look at?

You'd probably get some ideas if you go to trawlerforum.com (sister site). Even just looking at brand names for forum sections might be useful

Your range requirement suggests open ocean crossings?

Yes, that is the intention. My plan was a sailboat for crossings, but my girlfriend is both disabled and expecting, and she cannot sail in the event I should be injured. We are looking to accomplish a circumnavigation.

Tough one. Both those brands are heavily built and big chunks !

A Hans Christian or Lord Nelson MS with the mast removed might be the ticket. They are few and far between.

A larger version of the Gulf MS is a possibility. As are the Nauticats.

The more affordable ones are generally one off, custom built and almost unicorn like

That'll be dependant on size and speed
It's not a given

Selenes are just as pricey as Nordhavns and Kady Krogens.

Defever trawlers are more reasonably priced, but hard to find.

Cheoy Lee trawlers are a possibility (again, if you can find one).

Hatteras LRCs are also a possibility. They made a 58' and a 49' version. These are trawlers, not motor yachts, with fuel-efficient naturally aspirated diesels (and again, hard to find).

Are we noticing a pattern here? Either priced beyond many people's budgets, or hard to find.

Good luck with your search.

Re: Looking for brand recommendations for long range cruising motor yachts

What is your budget? If under $250k, you're looking at one-offs of smaller boats like a Willard 40 which could do the trip with very careful weather planning (same as the Hatts mentioned - not in same category as Nordhavn et al). Someone upthread mentioned Cheoy Lee - their older SeaMaster (46'???) has I believe done a circumnavigation but only a few were built. I think a couple KK42s have made long ocean passages and are in similar category as Willard 40. KK42 runs under $200k.

So much depends on your budget and how elaborate you want to be.

She could also just motor a sailboat if she's not able to sail. Sailboat hulls are very efficient after all.

I know a few wheelchair bound sailors that are better at handling their boats than 99% on this forum. She might just surprise you on what she's capable of with a bit of experience.

Aren't all these twin engines? You're not crossing on ocean with twin engines heh (unless you wish to bankrupt yourself 'and' they have the tanks).

Certainly the DeFever and Hatteras (within his budget) are coastal trawlers really, not ocean going vessels. He's really looking at a KK42 isn't he in all reality.

100% this. Larger Nauticats (42 etc) will do 1500nm under power under the right conditions and rpm, have huge fuel (1k litre)and water tanks (800l).

Not to hijack the thread so happy to private message but curious about Argos.

A family friend of ours who is just over 90 had a boat he sold in the 80s called Argos.

It was a Greek built fishing boat about 30ft built early 1900s that had a diesel engine added much later.

He completely rebuilt it but had to sell it for family reasons.

Wondering if it is the same boat?

Diesel Duck has always "tripped my trigger" but pricey. Lord Nelson Victory Tugs are rare and have an avid following.

Why not a boat that can do both like the Fisher 37 or, if you can find one, the 46.
Add an extra fuel tank for reserve to increase motor range and cut fuel costs when under sail.

Re: Looking for brand recommendations for long range cruising motor yachts

There are many long range cruising power boats. You have touched on many.

Nordhavn, Selene, KK, Fleming, Elling E6, Arksen, Bering, etc.

Of these the Selene seems to be the most reasonably priced. You can get a Selene 60 for a tad over $2.0 million. Thats a lot of money but its new. Look on yachtworld and you'll see many many passage makers for sale. The Fleming will be your most expensive and is a semi-discplacement

If you are planning a circumnavigation and speed isn't an issue the Norhavn, Selene, KK and Bering should be on your short list.
