Re: Very Sad, but Around the World, Really!
First thing I noticed in the picture was no lifelines or stern pulpit.

Re: Very Sad, but Around the World, Really!
A slight problem - sailing around the world was his long term plan and he was taking steps to prepare for that. There is nothing to indicate this boat was other than a step on that path, or that it was the boat he intended to use.

In any event lifelines on a boat that size are low enough to be next to useless. Me would not take them off if fitted - but would not bother fitting any if not already fitted.........but I accept the price of that might be going glug when otherwise I might not (I said next to useless - not completely!).

Yeah, after spending some time here he probably thought that since it wasn't a production boat it could easily cross any ocean.

The boat made it! This particular situation has nothing to do with the boat, but experience. After spending a few years on this forum people like poke sticks at each other based on personal opinions of ocean going boats, blue water designs, keel designed, etc....... looking for an argument and you know what that's fine....its an internet forum....and quite entertaining to me. Reality is; Sailing and crossing ocean has a lot more to do with the sailor than the boat. A good sailor, with common sense and well maintained properly suited boat will go just about anywhere.....ANYWHERE REGARDLESS OF BUDGET! A good sailor will know his boat, his boats abilities, his sailing abilities and adjust according.
That being said
What I wonder, LW, is how your fin keel, spade rudder Beneteau or Don L Hunter would have faired being washed up on shore in this case?

I hope that we never find out.
As you know, most boats don't do too well if they are not floating.
Doesn't matter if they are fiberglass, wood, steel, cement.
When they come in contact with the hard stuff the smaller ones tend to do a little better than the larger ones.

Well if his intent would be long distance voyaging, why nor put a decent system up. It doesn't matter how silly it looks as long as it helps keep you on the boat.
On my HR the lineline/pulpit system was treacherous. It looked ok until you grabbed it. Then it would be quite wobbly. I re-welded, re-fastened and in crucial areas made SS rails and used those for solar panels as well. Why screw around? I want to feel safe on my boat.

If I would have not clipped in last September (in similar conditions) I would have joined him. As it is, I got off easy, and he paid the ultimate price. Funny how 5 seconds can change your life.
CLIP IN IF SOLOING!

Re: Very Sad, but Around the World, Really!
What is so odd about this? Wasn't this just the sailing dinghy? I carry a sailing dinghy as one of my 7 tenders.
