Orca play interrupts race

It seems slowing the boat down helps defuse the attack according to this article.

As these raceboats get faster we might need to start thinking that the whales might not be able to avoid a collision by themselves.

Re: Orca play interrupts race

Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but orcas are very intelligent and I think they know exactly what they're doing.

All kinds of land-based mammals attack when they feel threatened. It's a little naive to think that water-based mammals won't do the same.

Who knows what set them off -- did a boat ram them, or did someone shoot one of their herd? But they do certainly seem to have a grudge against small boats.

A long-distance sailor I used to know once was rammed repeatedly by what he thought were pilot whales. He did some research and decided they were a small group of young males.

He likened the situation to walking down the wrong street in a bad neighborhood and being accosted by a gang of teen-aged boys on the corner.

I am Not a marine biologist but then again neither was Charlie Darwin. Have you seen them hunt mammals seeking refuge on ice? it is Un-nerving. My hunch is they are evolving in both play and what they consider pray. This could very well become a larger issue and need to be addressed.
I am wondering if there has been attacks on vessels other than sail? Would sonar pings send them on their way? It always seems the vessels are sailing with no motor on, would that deter them?
