Re: Man Overboard off Puerto Rico -- 7-Hour Swim to Shore

In Mexico, I met a couple who had a Peterson 46 that had a few folding mast steps on the rudder. I asked him why and he told me that in case he fell over, he would be able to climb up the rudder to other steps up the transom. I didn't ask for a demonstration.

Re: Man Overboard off Puerto Rico -- 7-Hour Swim to Shore

Is there any reason not to have a center line , say attached to the bow roller and back to the mast and from the mast back to a pad eye near the companion way hatch ( Aft cockpit boat ) . Then one's safety line could be adjusted so that you could not go over the safety lines into the sea . The line might foul a hatch etc , but a small price to pay for one's safety .

A remarkable self rescue by a remarkable man. 68 eh? You don't even look 58!
Would you care to share your future MoB preparations, and what would you do differently. Great job.

Re: Man Overboard off Puerto Rico -- 7-Hour Swim to Shore

someone mentioned prusiks, which kinda, sorta work, in my experience. jumars, or line ascenders is what you want. just leave one, or a pair attached to the line (Must be rope) that and small back-up air tank attached to the harness....

Well looking at it written out, sounds a little elaborate, but it might give you a better chance than a knotted trailing line.FWIW

This has been speculated on and discussed since I joined CF and amongst folk I've known for years before.. lots of theories over the years but.. I've yet to hear off anyone who has actually tried it then come back and said.. "This is how its done.. and I can prove it"..
The only way to my mind to have a 20/80 chance of self recovery is if Raymarine can come up with a waterproof remote that has an effective range of 1/2km and the signal not blocked by the transom..
Obviously this is useless with a wind pilot.. also.. being a person who has singlehanded extensively I have mulled this fairly often with no success.
Hell.. even the Mega $$ solo circuit race boats have not resolved this possibility so methinks you guys are...
How many reports of tethered MOB with crew have failed.. boils down to.. "Unpucker your butt and go sail.. or.. put something in the crew wanted section..

perhaps all that is required is a fresh open mind that has not given in to your , if I didn't do it, it can't be done attitude. Just think where mankind would be without creative mind's that continued to beat dead horse's. History is jam packed with people who did what other's said cannot be done. The ones that said it can't be, history has forgotten. pucker? never! crew, sometimes my grandkids.

Re: Man Overboard off Puerto Rico -- 7-Hour Swim to Shore

Okay, here's my contribution to drubbing
said deceased equine:

Have a tether on yourself, which could be
long enough to reach any part of your deck.
Attach it to the autopilot actuator arm, then
up and over something (and the bitter
end to something solid)so that if your
tether is pulled (Say, if you fell overboard),
the actuator disconnects. Either have
the sails set a bit weather
helm, or put a bungy on the tiller to head
the boat up, so it will stall if not on autopilot.
Then, if you go overboard, the autopilot
will disconnect and you can pull yourself
back to the boat.

You're on your own from there.

May need a bit more engineering if a wheel.

Somebody give this a try and get back to us.

Well I know one thing...the guy that invents an off the West Marine shelf overboard recovery system, will be a millionaire.

Ann

I know, the thought of being drug behind a boat on a line just brings up those Nature shows where they drag a seal shaped piece of neoprene behind the boat and film the Great Whites " getting air"
Gives me the willies, but honestly since I saw the movie Jaws long ago, I can't swim comfortably in the open ocean like I use to.

I think your right, and I don't think it would be that hard to do. Another way, have the autopilot go hard over 30 sec after receiving an AIS MOB alarm, 30 sec only to give you the chance to ignore it if it's not your alarm

Some rudders have a built in step that could be used to climb back to the boat.

I have a proposal. A long thin line to a sea anchor. When you pull the line, the sea anchor will be launched, and the boat almost stops. If you already have a sea anchor, all you need is one additional long line.
