Talking My first sail ever!

Finally got to take her for a test sail. My friend helped me since I have no clue how to work the halyards. Still have a ways to go to get tyenboat ready, and I have to check the three other sails I have in bags.

But turning the engine off was completely hypnotic. I can definitely see why sailing is so addicting. The short while we were out was very relaxing.

Not sure. Every other eyelet has a slide thing on it. I have no idea what they are called, or how many there should be.

But there is a rip about 5 inches or so along the seam on the mast. I'm going to take it down and have it repaired at a local sail shop before we take it out for extended trips.

I barely even know how to drive the thing right now. It is a LOT different than my power boat. Although I did back it out of the dock, got into the bay, and drove it back into the slip yesterday!

Indescribable excitement when one takes the boat for the first time.
Could have been a different excitement if you had fallen off the boat without
a life jacket.

Re: My first sail ever!

Cool, congratulations!
Might I make a suggestion. A lot of us who've sailed for a while wish, I'm sure, that they could recall more details & feelings about their initial & early sailing experiences. I surely know that I do. Albeit since I was 3, my compositions skills probably would have sucked

So keep a notepad, or Ipad on hand for the next week or three, & write down everything that you can recall that happened that day. Along with how each thing that you did or that occured made you feel. What thoughts it stirred, etc. And do so all the way down to the weather conditions, the pre-saiing anicipations, & the post saiing high. Plus what actions the experience prompted you to undertake, why, & when. Up to & (often) including lifestyle changes that you made/are making, so that sailing can be a bigger part of your life. And what your sailing dreams are now, vs. a month ago, etc.

I'm sure that having such put down on paper will be a treasured document. If not now, then in 3 months, or 30 years. Given that for many, one's first/early sails are life changing moments.

Oh, & have fun. Both out on the water, & while tinkering with the boat!!!

Re: My first sail ever!

Forty years of sailing, and I still get a charge out of it when I turn off the engine and the boat keeps moving.

You should get a lot of enjoyment out that boat. Stay safe, and never stop learning.

BTW, good that your friend helped you out, but based on your video, it doesn't look like he should be your source for sailing knowledge. Yup, I realize you didn't say he is. Looks like the halyard was really loose, which contributed to the baggy-ness in your sail at the mast (luff) and I don't think he ever eased the topping lift. Probably doesn't mean a lot you right now, but it will pretty soon.

But, you were sailing! Excellent!!!!!

Re: My first sail ever!

Congratulations your off on a learning adventure. The best thing I think I know about sailing is it is perfect. We can do so many more things to make it better and improve and we can choose to do some all or none. This makes it perfectly enjoyable. Kind Regards, Lou

How exciting! Congratulations. Your comment about turning off the engine gave me a really beautiful feeling. Since I sold my sailboat a year ago, I am CRAVING that very feeling. Every day.

Ideally every eyelet should have a slide to keep the luff taut/straight and aerodynamic.. get the sailmaker to fit all the slides or.. buy and fit them yourself.. not hard to do.
