Halyard looks as if it's not properly tensioned. A downhaul could fix that luff.
Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How super!

Re: My first sail ever!
I think you should get a book like Royce's Sailing Illustrated.. the Sailor's Bible... it's a great little reference book and has EVERYTHING you'll need to know. I'd send it to you as a gift if I had your address.

Re: My first sail ever!
Sounds like you did fine. My first sail in the current boat required us to be picked up by USGC when the wind died, and our outboard also died due to ethanol poisoning, as we were driving toward a sharp rock death.

So keep a notepad, or Ipad on hand for the next week or three, & write down everything that you can recall that happened that day. Along with how each thing that you did or that occured made you feel. What thoughts it stirred, etc. And do so all the way down to the weather conditions, the pre-saiing anicipations, & the post saiing high. Plus what actions the experience prompted you to undertake, why, & when. Up to & (often) including lifestyle changes that you made/are making, so that sailing can be a bigger part of your life. And what your sailing dreams are now, vs. a month ago, etc.
I'm sure that having such put down on paper will be a treasured document. If not now, then in 3 months, or 30 years. Given that for many, one's first/early sails are life changing moments.

Re: My first sail ever!
Welcome to sailing.....
But, when I saw the way you hoisted the mainsail, it really jumps out that you or your friend did not release the main sheet....it was cranked down hard and cleeted .
So, you can not hoist the main to get proper shape, the boom is being held down.
My sugestion, get some professional sailing lessons from a qualified and certified sailing school or organization.
One of the first things you will learn about hoisting the mainsail
1. Release the main sheet and run it out a couple of yards.
2. Slack the boom vang as well
3. Slack off your reefing lines
Haul the main up with the main halyward, look at the luff....I usually make ti a little tight with a beginning vertical wrinkle in luff..depending on the strength of the wind. One the main is trimmed that vertical wrinkle will no longer be visible. The luff will be smooth.
Sheet in on the main, and if on the wind, the luff of the main should be roughly paralled to the wind if on a point of sail that is from close hauled to a beam reach.
Look at the luff, it should look like an airplane wing, smooth with draft appropiate to the wind conditions and pont of sail.
When a sail looks like your main did, with wrinkles at the luff slides, it is an immediate indicator of not enough luff tension, and one of the major reasons is that the main was hoisted, with the boom being pulled downward and tightly secured due to not realeasing the main sheet.
My attitude, about doing things in life while in an alien enviornment, to to learn everything about that partiuclar endeavor, whether it is on the ocean, in the ocean, or in the air.
Learn from a professional organization that has certified U.S.C.G licensed insttructors, or PADI certified instructors for diving, or FAA Certified Flight Instructors if learning to fly.
Just FYI....but sailing takes a whole lot of knowledge, not only when leaning for the pros, but then getting the experience on the ocean.

Oh, & have fun. Both out on the water, & while tinkering with the boat!!!

I'm having a "ships log" custom made by an artisan friend of mine. She's making it out of leather and alcohol inks. It will be perfect for what you are suggesting!! What a good idea!

LOL! He isn't. And he said that lifting the sail, and keeping the arrow at the top of the mast pointed to the wind is about the extent of his knowledge.
I have other friends who are going to teach me. One has a 1978 Perry 47' Ketch, the other has a 32' Jouet, and the other has a 38' Hunter liveaboard. The friend with the 47' Perry is my main source of education since he is ASA 101, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108 certified, and working on his 110.

It was truly mesmerizing. Prior to this, my only experience on a sail boat was motoring in a Christmas boat parade. I have NEVER been on a sailboat with the sails up. This was the first time ever, and it was on my own boat!
We were only out there for maybe 30 minutes max, but it was enough to make me day dream about taking longer trips ever since I put her back in the slip.
I've always been on power boats, and I thought I loved my 18.5' Chaparral, but I'm head over heels for this girl. My power boat is fun, but this girl is relaxing. I don't have a care in the world when I'm on her, even in the slip - except that motoring thing we're talking about in the other thread.

Re: My first sail ever!
It's nice to see your involved and making a reply . This demonstrates you are reading making an effort to be interactive. I think you will have a lot of us trying to give advice. We are as happy as you are. For whatever reasons sailing has been declining about 8% a year. If you keep sailing your reversing that trend. You have started with a good size boat and it has a wheel. This may not be as intuitive as a dingy but if you do not have any other comparisons any place is a good start. Man has been sailing for ages. You might find some older sailors that are more than willing to help. If you find them to crusty leave them on the dock asap. Lessons are an option if you have the cash. You can continue on your own. My first advice is kiss keep it simple and safe. Take the best care of your sails and your boat as possible with your budget they will take care of you. Everything on the boat is for the sails the hull the rig and even the monkey with the line. If you start just sailing on the main that will work. You can also sail on just the jib. Then try to use them both or go right to it with both and have at it. Let's all give ya a hand mate! A bad day on the water is better than a good day inland Kind Regards, Lou
