Fuel container cap/lid seals

Hi All,

Wondering if these fuel tanks are meant to come with some sort of rubberised seal within the fuel cap (not the breather screw cap part) but the larger cap. They seem to leak fuel quite easily with the slightest movement of fuel in teh container. This happens to both tanks I bought and the caps are otherwise sealed up nicely and have a neat easy to wind on thread...don't look to be stripped or anything. Appreciate the feedback.

You can make one from cork or neoprene gasket material, about 1/8 - 3/16 thick.

Or use silicone sealant. Put a light film of oil on the inside of the cap and the threads of the boss on the tank. Put a "just enough" bead of sealant where the gasket should be in the cap. Let the sealant set so it has a nice skin on it. Screw it onto the tank, but just until the resistance from the sealant is felt. Don't tighten it down. Let it sit for 24 hours. This will form a nice gasket.

...or, you can buy the kind of gasket material that is used for carburetor gaskets, and make a washer that will fit in the cap. Use a compass to outline the circles, and sharp scissors to cut out a washer.

Incidentally, if you have plastic dishes for your boat, the silicone seal method above, will make them non-skid. Just put the bead of seal on, then set the dishes on waxed paper till the seal sets up.
