Para anchor strenght.

I am setting up a para anchor and just bought a 15ft diameter chute. The chute is of very fine material and probably ment to be used to drop equipment from a plane.
Imo it doesn't really look strong enough.
I can get another stronger one but it is 24ft diameter.
My boat is 40ft and about 12 tons.
Has anyone had experience with light chutes before. Am i waisting my time with this one?

Mine is 18 foot diameter for a 40 foot boat. 8 tons.

But they are more than parachutes used from aircraft. Light, yes, but not parachute silk... and they are reinforced with tape.

That's odd. Ours is a massive canvas thing. Really thick and heavy. Is it out of date?

Beware the decommissioned aerial parachutes! They were decommissioned for a reason, and will likely fail when you really need them. If I remember my hydraulics engineering, water is like 870 something times more dense than air, and even though an aerial chute is designed to open at high speeds, it is nothing like the load of a boat sliding down a steep wave. Get a "real" marine sea anchor; you life depends on that as much as the guy jumping from a plane depends on an aerial chute.

I am pretty shore this one has never been used.
It was all packed neatly in the cardboard canister. It will never go back in.
I could probably reinforce everything but Its probably easier to get another one.
The other green chute in the shop appeared to be allot more substantial. But if it won't cut the mustard then I would be just throwing away another $200.

I am now thinking of getting myself A Para-Tech Sea anchor. Rated to 25000 pounds.
Can anyone recommend them?
Any first hand experience using them?

Update.
Finished up buying an Australian made "Bass Strait 18" Para Anchor. Its a vast improvement on the previous chute.
