Hidden Impeller on Atomic 4 - Pearson 30

Following the water intake hose, it appears that the water pump/impeller
is aft and to starboard of the engine compartment-out of sight and out of reach!

So, should I start removing obstructions such as other hoses to get to the impeller, or would a mirror help to find and replace the impeller?

Thank you in advance for suggestions!

Re: Hidden Impeller on Atomic 4 - Pearson 30

My previous boat had exactly that setup. Major PITA. My solution was my incredible wife, who is a lot smaller than I. She could get in there and make the change.

Whatever you do, you will need to be able to get your hands on the impeller and shaft. You will need working space. The impeller is held in place using one of those annoying shaft clips (not sure what they’re called), so it’s doubly awkward.

Good luck.

You can get a replacement cover that has an o-ring and four captured thumb screws. Makes changing the impeller a lot easier. A mirror and lots of light makes the job go quicker.

While you are working on the impeller look for the water pump grease cup. Doubt the pump has been changed to a grease less pump, so you may want to add grease or give it a few turns in to lube the pump shaft after you've changed the impeller.

Can you put a door/hatch in the quarter berth wall or etc for better access?
