Re: Lost in an inflatable dinghy

A scenario that crosses my mind every time I'm returning to the boat with an offshore wind! Lucky to be alive... good on her for surviving.

Alain Bombard could certainly have given her a few tips.

Why my passengers and I are required to bring a VHF on every dinghy ride. No exceptions.

Why we always have a small anchor on a long rode in the dinghy as well as a NicoSignal flare system.

Same rule on my boat. Note however that a mobile phone will be just as effective in most places.

Absolutely. I agree. The VHF floats, is waterproof and provides immediate help, which is the only reason I strongly prefer it.

Channel 16 will get you help in a minute or 2 in the harbor or drifting out the mouth of one. I figure the seconds and minutes may help so I tend to still go with the VHF. But it's certainly true the mobile phone works as well.

Re: Lost in an inflatable dinghy

We see very few PFDs on dinghies in the Caribbean. Add that to the list.

Re: Lost in an inflatable dinghy

Usually keep our anchor onboard dinghy, 4kg mantus on 5m chain spliced to15m line will hook us under any conditions. Vhf also always...phones good but no replacement for Vhf : here we unavoidably have to cross a commercial harbor a lot to get where we are going in the dink. If I crap out in that channel, I'm getting run down by a ferry. Vhf lets me call them, a mobile phone does not. Same for other boats who could give me a tow. Get a floating Vhf in your dinghy kit.

The article didn’t say what was in her shopping cart. If she was out for days maybe it was food and fluids.
