Lagoon (?) on the rocks near Menorca

Just saw this on Instagram:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B5BR--Wq..._web_copy_link

Google translate says the crew got in to trouble during a storm and eventually drifted onto the rocks. Two crew members plus dog safely off the boat.

It doesn't look like a charter to me with all of the solar panels and crazy graphics. Could be wrong of course.

Glad to hear everyone is safe.

Not a charter, sailed from France to Menorca, likely headed for the Canaries but got caught by storm conditions and failed to make port.

Too deep for an anchor? Or would that not have helped?

Re: Lagoon (?) on the rocks near Menorca

Does anyone have an idea on the weather before they went on the rocks? Wind & wave directional development?

Might be that they tried to hide themselves in the cove?
Possibly even anchored?
It's definitely a nasty spot, but if you can't go into port, for whatever reason they have perhaps tried it as a last resort?

Getting a bit offshore behind the island would have been perhaps a better choice for such a big boat...

I'm not great at weather, but that doesn't look like a storm....am I missing something? (no sarcasm intended)

From the initial post:
"mientras su mujer dormía. El barco navegaba con el piloto automático hasta que chocó contra las rocas"
Unofficial translation:
...while his wife was asleep. The boat was sailing under autopilot until it crashed against the rocks.

Re: Lagoon (?) on the rocks near Menorca

I have so often heard it said the the boat can take more than you can!

So could all you who have more experience tell me why is it that every wreck on rocks, run aground or mid ocean abandonment shows a vessel with the sails furled. Some abandoned vessels float around the oceans for years. recently the Irish navy was sent out to sink one.

This case shows a wreck with all the sails furled.

Why is that done? is it out of fear?

I have over time and circumstance saved a few old small sailing dinghy fore sails. wouldn't rigging one on the fore stay in a storm even If it eventually got blown to pieces be better than bare poles.

In order to steer something it has to be moving.
In order to miss rock you have to steer away from them.

Dependence on engine power does not seem to be the answer. storm stirred fuel tanks causes blocked filters and engine shut down

Re: Lagoon (?) on the rocks near Menorca

Here's the whole passage Inanna was translating. No idea if this is just someone making something up or someone in the know.

"Holaa. El patrón sufrió un desvanecimiento mientras su mujer dormía. El barco navegaba con el piloto automático hasta que chocó contra las rocas. El barco está totalmente destrozado y a acabado por undirse ."

Google:
"Hello. The boss suffered a faint while his wife slept. The ship was sailing with the autopilot until it hit the rocks. The ship is totally shattered and finished undressing."
