Morgan boats

What are some of the known issues, if any, with Morgan boats built in the 70's and 80's and in the 37 to 41 foot category?

Your best bet for info is at the Morgan owners site, My buddy has a Morgan 38 and that's where he gets his Morgan specific info.

Tom's link from above mostly talks about 41 footers and mostly the Out Island model. There are a lot of other Morgans.

We have a Morgan 38 that has quite a bit less freeboard than the OI and was designed by the renowned Ted Brewer. A very pretty (we think!) boat that sails great and thrives in blue water.

I raced a Heritage One-Ton for many years on Lake Erie. (70's Morgan 37) We were 3rd place boat of the year one season. We won a lot of flags & pickle trays. It was really fast in its day and that particular boat is still winning races on lake Erie, new owner. It was a great sailing boat and capable in very heavy weather. I also raced its sister ship in the Chicago Mac in '81 with sustained 70 knot winds. We never felt worried, just got tired of puking. The Heritage was 37'-8". Is it possible it is the same as a Morgan 38?

Traditional IOR design with lots of sails and sail changes. We carried 4 kites, 3 staysails, 2 #1 genoas 170%, #2, #3, #4, drifter, blooper.

I own an OI 415 sloop. I am a big fan.

The Perkins 4-108 was a bit to small for the boat. ( I hear ) The 4-154 has ample power but parts are hard to find. She sails comfortably on a reach or run and points best w/ the engine.

I had heard the stories of tacking w/ the engine, so on sea trials performed several tacks w/ main and jib alone in 5knt winds without trouble.

I bought a sound hull, engine, decent sails and standing rigging. Most of my sailing has been in the Gulf of Mexico.

Not a race boat but a good choice for a cruiser on a budget.

If ya buy one, get one you can sail off on and sleep out on the hook ur first night.

You're kinda like asking which model Chevy has issues --- Chevelle to Malibu.

Too many different boats to even begin to comment on, hence the responses so far.

What Stu said above is accurate....Morgan made many boats from '60's to 80's...different designs, and different factories...having said that; the vast majority are generally very well constructed and sail well... the range of boats is large and diverse, so really; model specific questions are needed when inquiring about Morgan designs...
I love my current one immensely, and loved my past one...

Thanks for the input. I'm interested in Morgan boats and not just a 41OI. I did read several of David Pascoe's reviews and haven't really seen a boat that he had a high opinion of. Maybe I just haven't read enough.

I might add the morgan Out Island 36, good sailor...
while the Out I. 41 does not point well, it was extremely innovative for its interior size, volume and layout, much heralded....this one design was responsible for the charter trade increasing markedly in the '70's, still today, its large...
though it doesn't go to windward well,( understated) the OI 41 has to be Morgans most successful hull..perhaps 320 built...
Not sure of the construction methods of the Catalina Morgans, though they do look good, I do not believe Charley had much input into the actual build, i.e.design only...
