Bilge...Why Is There Water?

I've always wanted to ask this question. I've often been walking through marinas, and see water being pumped out of the boat through the bilge discharge, even though the weather has been beautiful, and no rain. In October, we were in Annapolis, and I noticed that many of the brand new boats at the show, also had water being pumped out of them. Brand new boats! There was no rain, so no water leaking into the boat from there. There were grey water tanks, presumably well sealed... black water tanks, also presumably sealed. I'm guessing the fresh water tanks were also well sealed, being that they were brand new boats. So, where would that water actually be coming from?

Are you sure it wasn't water from the A/C unit?

New boats I would have to second the AC being the culprit.

Not all boats leak, some have dusty bilges and have to be polished to keep them clean.

The water you see being pumped out is either from the ac unit or refrigeration unit... not the bilge.

Pete,
It's good your bilge is dry because unless the picture is not clear it doesn't look like you have a bilge...must be a newish boat.

The bilge is 5 inches at the deepest. The yacht hull is a canoe shape with twin keels. The fin version has a deeper keel stub to mount the bolt on keel. However, for the bilge keeled boats they drop a different shape into the mould with recesses for the two keels to bolt into.

Lots of boats in marinas attached to shore power run their air conditioning continuously to keep the boat cool and dry even if no one is on board, reduces mold etc.

Thank you. There was a leak from a shroud plate when we first go her but easily sorted. Another mild panic whilst at sea a couple of years later turned out to be the freshwater pump leaking

However, the boat does smell much better with clean dry bilges.

It is the cooling water from the condenser side of the A/C system; similar to the cooling water from an engine.

Anytime the A/C is running, there will be cooling water discharged.
