Spanish Virgin Islands

Hey - I'm doing a week long charter in April in the SVI and while I've read everything I've been able to find about the area I was hoping to get some updates from anyone who's been there recently. Things like condition of mooring balls, places to avoid, etc.

Also, the typical week long itineraries that people post involve spending the first night at Isla Palominos. From what I've read it gets really crowded on the weekends (our first night is a Saturday) so I'm wondering if it'll be difficult to find a spot there or if there are other good alternatives. If we were leaving in the morning I'd be tempted to just go to Culebra but two of our crew aren't arriving until 11:30 so probably won't be at the marina until 1 or 2 which I think would be a bit of a late start for that trip.

Anyway, thoughts? Thanks!

Palominos is a good stop--most folks take the ferries over there and are gone by nightfall. If you can't find a mooring ball, just drop the pick.

Re: Spanish Virgin Islands

There was an article I found on yahoo about a week ago that mentioned an island near Culebra or Vieques that was supposedly worth visiting. I'll see if I can find it.
In the meantime, I found this: https://sunshinesailingcharters.wordpress.com/

NO! Don't go there... no place to anchor, reefs are dead, not much to look at, beaches are horrible, water is cold, and I hear there are cannibals. Stay away and keep all the other boats away too!

I second the advice of Zboss. I was over there for two weeks around Christmas. Next chance I get I will go back to confirm that it still sucks. Besides the cannibals there is Dengue and Chikungunya too!!!

If you do choose to risk being a meal for the locals and can't be talked out of visiting, be very careful if you use a mooring ball. They are not maintained. I suggest anchoring is a much better option.

Enjoy your trip.

Absolutely, the place is a dump. Don't waste yer time. Alien space craft have taken over - they kidnap you and perform experiments on yer brain. They especially like beautiful wimmen and intelligent guys, and I can't figure why they let me go.....

Aren't all the anchorages littered with un-exploded ordinance as well???
